WORK 41 / PATTERN DEPARTMENT

By The
Same Rules.

Eight instructions. Sixty-four rows. You may leave a choice along the way.

Choose a starting row and decide what each group of three cells should leave below its middle cell. Choose particular cells inside the pattern, then follow what the same instructions make of them.

Want to draw the whole unit yourself? Open the repeat desk to see how your marks meet their neighbours.

Want to follow a whole field? Open the Neighbours desk — new tab to draw a starting field, compare two sets of instructions and ask why a cell changed.

01 / WRITE THE INSTRUCTIONS

Small decisions.

MATCHES PRINT

Ink is 1. Paper is 0. Press a cell to change it. These controls edit the draft; making a sheet applies it all at once.

Ink / 1Paper / 0
The starting row

All 32 cells, reading left to right. This is row 1.

The eight instructions

Read three cells in the previous row: left, middle, right. Choose the cell to put below the middle one.

Beyond both edges is always paper. The right edge never joins the left.

Leave a chosen cell

Choose paper or ink in rows 2–64. The three cells above are read as usual; your choice replaces their result at this one position. Later rows use that chosen value. Row 1 stays the starting row.

0 / 32 CHOSEN CELLS IN THE DRAFT

No chosen cells in the draft. Every cell after the starting row follows its instruction.

A choice stays yours even when it matches the ordinary rule result. Changing the starting row or rules keeps every choice until you remove it.

The draft matches the print. Change a starting cell, instruction or chosen cell to make another sheet.

02 / FOLLOW THEM THROUGH

32 × 64
INK / PAPER
By The Same Rules A 32-column, 64-row two-colour pattern. The first row is the authored starting row. Each later cell follows the same eight elementary cellular automaton rules, reading the three cells above it from left to right. Cells beyond both edges are always paper, with no wrapping. The exact starting row and all eight rule outputs are printed below. Outside both edges: paper (0). No wrapping. Made by following orders. Kept by choice.
Management has standardized the instructions. It has not standardized the circumstances.

Click or tap a printed pattern cell to inspect it and fill the choice location. This makes no mark. The row and column controls below work without pointing.

Keep printed SVG

Undo returns the previous sheet, its instructions and chosen cells. The latest 20 previous sheets stay available during this visit. The SVG keeps this exact print and all its instructions and choices; your browser handles saving.

Continue a kept sheet.

Open an unchanged SVG kept from this pattern desk, up to 1,000,000 bytes. It is read locally and reviewed before replacing anything. Other SVG files are not supported.

THE SAME INSTRUCTIONS / WITHOUT CHOSEN CELLS

What the rules leave.

This complete sheet uses the printed starting row and the same eight rules, with every chosen cell left out.

0 of 2048 cells differ from your printed edition.

The count compares the two complete results. Draft changes wait for Make sheet.

The complete pattern from the printed starting row and eight rules, without any chosen cells, followed by those instructions.
Untouched by chosen cells.

The first sheet is ready. Change the starting row, an instruction or a chosen cell, then make a sheet of your own.

03 / ASK A PARTICULAR CELL

Why this mark?

Was it the starting row, an instruction or your chosen cell? Choose its row and column; row 1 is at the top and column 1 is at the left.

Inspection always reads the printed sheet. Draft changes take effect only after Make sheet.

PRINTED ROW 2 / COLUMN 1

In row 1, the three actual cells above this position are paper, paper, paper (000). The printed instruction 000 → 0 would leave paper in row 2, column 1.

No chosen cell replaces this position. Its printed value is paper / 0, following that instruction.

The left parent is outside the sheet, so it is paper (0). It does not come from the right edge.

ONE PRINTED CHOICE / A COMPARISON

Without this choice.

Inspect a printed chosen cell to compare both patterns. Click its cell in the printed sheet, or enter its row and column in the inspector. Draft choices wait for Make sheet.

LET A PRINTED ROW BEGIN AGAIN

Continue from row 2.

Use the row you are inspecting as the beginning of another 64-row sheet. The eight instructions stay the same. Choices on or above that row become part of the new starting row; later choices move up with the pattern.

The current print stays here until you apply the reviewed continuation. Its earlier rows are then available through Undo sheet during this visit; they are not saved as a separate history in the new SVG.
