A SMALL MOVEMENT / THE CEL DESK

Draw the
room once.

Let eight small performances pass through it. Management would have redrawn the wallpaper.

Scenery is one shared opaque picture. Each cel sits over it: clear pixels reveal the room, while Paper is a colour that covers it.

Cel 1

Cel colour or transparency
A neighboring cel · drawing reference

Cel 1 has no previous cel. Choose the other direction or Wrap ends. Faint inset squares show its committed raw colours only where the editing cel is Clear. A light square with a dark outline is reference Paper; reference Clear has no square. The small hollow circle still marks your actual Clear pixel. Painting covers the guide immediately. Scenery is never the reference, and the guide stays out of playback, thumbnails, reviews and kept copies. Guide choices do not change your drawing or Undo history.

Draw a stroke and release for one Undo. Leaving the grid breaks the line until you return. Escape or another control cancels an unfinished stroke. The small hollow mark means a clear cel pixel. Touch scrolling works outside the grid.

Use the row and column fields or arrow keys in the grid to choose a starting pixel without painting. Choose a colour, then Fill connected area. Matching stored colours join across their four edges, never diagonally. Clear and opaque Paper stay separate. Scenery fill affects all poses; cel fill changes only the editing cel.

Shift the whole editing cel · pixels

A shift clears the vacated area and may discard pixels at the edge. There is no hidden off-frame buffer. Undo restores the complete cel; the scenery never moves.

Reflect the whole editing cel

Left–right reverses all 16 columns; top–bottom reverses all 16 rows. An off-centre drawing changes position as well as direction. Clear pixels stay clear, Paper stays opaque, and the scenery stays in place. One Undo restores the cel.

Turn the whole editing cel · 90 degrees

Turn the whole 16 × 16 frame around its centre. An off-centre drawing changes position as well as direction. Clear pixels stay clear; Paper stays opaque. The scenery, other seven cels, all eight holds and base pace stay unchanged. One Undo restores the complete drawing.

Place the whole editing cel in the sequence

Moves keep each cel and its hold together. Editing and preview follow the moved drawings; scenery and base pace stay unchanged. Undo and Redo restore drawing and timing while keeping the current editing and preview slot numbers.

Eight cels over one room

Move the picture with a striped mask.

A SMALL MOVEMENT / FOUR POSES ON PAPER

A little movement.
By hand.

Four poses share one picture. A separate striped mask reveals them in turn as it moves to the right. Choose from your committed drawings; the film stays on its desk.

Four positions in the sliding sequence
Striped picture with a black mask at position 1, revealing narrow strips of pose 1
Position 1 / pose 1 / mask 0 mm right

The mask covers three quarters of the picture. You see narrow strips, with a darker result. Movement uses four equal positions; the film’s pace and holds are not printed.

This is a digital alignment guide. The printed result depends on scale, alignment and how opaque the dark stripes are.

Two sheets. One matching pair.

The picture is 96 × 96 mm. The mask is 120 × 120 mm, with extra coverage for sliding. Both downloads use A4 portrait sheets and a 50 mm scale bar.

Keep both again after changing drawings or sequence choices. Moving the preview mask does not change the print pair. Keep your film link or complete cels JSON separately to return to the drawings.

  1. Print both sheets at actual size / 100%, with fit-to-page off. Check that each scale bar measures 50 mm. Use ordinary paper for the picture.
  2. The mask needs a transparent sheet you already have, with genuinely clear gaps and opaque dark stripes. Ordinary white paper is opaque: unprinted gaps on paper do not become clear or turn into holes. Use a printing method suitable for your material.
  3. Cut the mask at its marked 120 mm square. Place its corners at the matching corner guides around the picture; keep its vertical stripes parallel to the picture’s sides. At this alignment, position 1 is visible.
  4. Keep the mask close and flat. Slide it right by 1.5 mm at a time, up to 4.5 mm for position 4; slide back to reverse. Check one proof before making more.

Carry a colour through the poses.

Replace one opaque colour in the editing cel, throughout all eight cels, or in the shared scenery. Separate patches count too. Review what changes before applying it.

Choose where and which colour

Clear is never replaced or painted by this operation. Paper is an opaque colour. Choosing all cels leaves the same colour in the scenery alone; choosing scenery leaves every raw cel alone. Finish a stroke or finish/cancel an incoming file review before using these controls. Review pauses playback.

Plan a passage.

Use editing cel 1 as one whole drawing. Choose a later ending pose and its final position; review the intermediate poses before replacing anything.

Source · editing cel 1

Across is positive to the right; down is positive toward the bottom. Offsets begin at zero in the source pose and end at your chosen move. Only position changes: later cels are replaced completely, including clear and opaque Paper pixels. Their timing and the shared scenery stay as they are. Review pauses playback and discards an unfinished stroke.

Copy a cel detail.

Take one rectangle from any cel and place it in editing cel 1. Copy the stored drawing, including Clear and opaque Paper, without replacing the whole cel.

Destination · editing cel 1

Columns count from the left; rows count from the top, starting at 1. Clear erases target ink to reveal the shared scenery; Paper covers it. This copies a snapshot, including when source and destination overlap in one cel. Review pauses playback and discards an unfinished stroke. Apply is a separate decision.

A folded paper note crosses the room. The room is drawn once; clear cel pixels let it show through.

Keep the room and the performance.

A complete editable drawing

The JSON keeps shared scenery, all eight cels, clear pixels, Paper, base pace and holds. Selection, unfinished strokes and Undo history stay in this visit. It needs this desk to resume editing.

Reopen a complete drawing

Choose one JSON file, up to 32 KiB. Reading stays on this device; review comes before replacing anything.

Flat copies for watching

GIF, PNG sheet and film link combine the two planes. They cannot restore the scenery or transparent cels. GIF and link keep the timing; the PNG sheet does not.

Bring a flat film to this desk.

Paste an existing A Small Movement film link, review all eight poses, then explicitly replace. These arrive as fully opaque cels; Paper will cover the scenery.
