WORK 84 / EIGHT QUEENS. NO SHARED LINES.

Room
for eight.

A place for everyone.
A line for no one else.

Place eight queens on the board. No two may share a row, a column or a straight diagonal. Try an arrangement, check its pairs, and make room.

Choose an empty square to place a queen. Choose a queen to remove it. To move one, remove it and place it elsewhere. Conflicting queens carry a dashed outline and !, and are named in the notebook. Keyboard: Tab enters the board; arrow keys move without wrapping, Home/End move to the row’s first/last square, and Ctrl+Home/End move to the board’s first/last square. Enter or Space chooses a square; Tab leaves the board.

CHECK EVERY QUEEN

Eight places.
No clashes.

0/8queens placed
0conflicting pairs
8 queens still to place.

Conflicts are allowed while you try things out. You can remove a queen whenever you need more room.

Possible finishes

Count complete eight-queen arrangements that keep every queen here. Rotations and reflections count separately. Changing the arrangement clears the count.

Getting the board ready…

Conflicting pairs

No conflicting pairs so far. Finish with all eight queens.

One pair means two queens sharing a row, column or diagonal. Every such pair is counted once, including queens with another queen between them. This is a shared-line count, rather than a list of unblocked chess captures.

THE WHOLE TASK

Try a place.
Check a line.

A queen’s row goes across the board, its column goes down, and its diagonals run corner to corner through the squares. The eight queens must all have their own rows, columns and diagonals. No other chess rules are needed.

Every placement or removal keeps one Undo step. Undo restores the preceding arrangement; the most recent 100 changes stay in this visit. Restart empties a changed board as one undoable step. A finished board stays in place until Undo or Restart.

Nothing saves automatically. Reloading begins with an empty board. There is no timer, target sequence or single hidden arrangement.
