WORK 81 / THREE CLOSED BOXES
Out of
sight.
You can’t see inside.
You can ask a question.
Two objects are hidden in each box. Send a probe through an edge port, read what comes back, and mark the two places that explain it.
First box
4 rows × 4 columns / 2 objectsLetters A–P are ports, clockwise from the top left. Numbered squares are possible positions. Mark at most two; press a mark again to remove it. Unmark one to choose another. The box never shows the objects or an interior path.
KEEP THE EVIDENCE
What the
box tells you.
These are observations and provisional marks, not a score. An exit pair counts as two known ports and appears once below.
- No probes yet. Choose any letter around the box.
Predict one port from your marks
With two marks placed, choose a port and calculate what those guesses would do. The forecast uses your marks alone; it does not ask the closed box.
This spends no probe or Undo. Choose two marks first. Changing a mark, port or box, Undo, or Restart clears the forecast.
Check compares all sixteen ports, including those you have not tried. A pair is accepted if every boundary result agrees, even if a different pair could explain the same results.
Undo restores a whole change, including its evidence and Check. Restart is one undoable change. All three boxes keep independent progress during this visit.
BEFORE YOUR FIRST QUESTION
How a probe
finds its way.
Think of it moving one square ahead at a time. The objects stay fixed; only your marks change. The same port always gives the same result.
Straight ahead: Hit.
An object directly ahead absorbs the probe. This takes priority over either diagonal object.
One forward diagonal: turn away.
An object one square ahead and to the left turns the probe right by a quarter turn. One ahead and to the right turns it left. It turns in its current square before trying to move again.
Both forward diagonals: reverse.
With an object on each forward diagonal, the probe reverses direction in its current square. It then follows the same rules on its way back.
At the edge: Return or Exit.
Before a probe enters, an object on either forward diagonal sends it straight back: Return. A direct object still takes priority and gives Hit. Inside, a step beyond the edge exits. If it leaves through its entry port, that is Return; any other exit gives a pair of letters.
