LETTER 17
The Spare Key
A fictional letter from Management.
Written
Our neighbour gave Management a spare key.
“The tall one on Saturday,” she said. “The little one can wait.”
We filled the jug at the sink and carried it back. A drop fell on the postcard beside the tall plant.
We picked it up by the edges. It showed a harbour.
We turned it over to check the writing.
The ink had not run.
We kept it in our hand while we watered the tall plant.
There were six lines. The last one was under our thumb.
We put the jug down and changed hands.
We put the card back, picture up, and took the jug to the sink.
From the doorway, we looked at the table.
We went back and moved the card half an inch.
