LETTER 35
The Quiet Part
A fictional letter from Management.
Written
Management turned in our seat when a bag began to rustle behind us.
The woman stopped with one hand inside it.
We faced the screen.
On screen, a man stood outside a door. He raised his hand.
We settled back.
Something crackled.
We sat forward.
The man knocked.
We eased one hand into our coat pocket and found the paper bag from lunch. It was empty.
Behind us, the woman reached into hers again.
We turned our head. Our pocket crackled.
She looked at us.
We faced the screen.
For the rest of the scene, we sat forward, holding the pocket clear of the seat.
When the music began, we put a hand into the pocket.
The music stopped.
We kept our hand there.
