LETTER 50
The Private Call
A fictional letter from Management.
Written
Mae asked whether she could use the small meeting room for a private call.
We said of course and came out.
We stood by the door to keep people from interrupting.
Ruth came along with a mug.
We put a finger to our lips.
She stopped beside us.
“Everything all right?” she whispered.
“We don’t know.”
From inside came a short laugh.
We looked at Ruth. Ruth looked at the mug.
A man from the workshop came to ask about the meeting.
We waved him quiet.
He waited too.
Mae opened the door.
“The plumber can come Thursday,” she said.
“We can move things round for you.”
“I’ve arranged it.”
She took the mug from Ruth and went back to her desk.
We went into the meeting room.
Our papers were still open at the point where we had been interrupted.
