LETTER 37

The Hinge

A fictional letter from Management.

Written

Management tightened the hinge on our neighbour’s sewing box.

She tipped the buttons onto the table.

We turned the loose screw until its slot lined up with the other one.

“Try it.”

She lowered the lid. When she lifted the little knob, the whole box came up.

We held the box.

She pulled again.

“Very firm,” we said.

She took the screwdriver and turned one screw back a little.

The lid opened.

“There,” she said.

The slots now pointed in different directions.

We tightened the screw until the slots lined up again.

She began putting the buttons back.

We laid the screwdriver inside, beside the cotton.

“So you’ll know where it is.”

She closed the lid.

We pulled the little knob.

She held the box.

We pulled again.

Inside, the screwdriver slid against the wood.
