LETTER 34
The Gap
A fictional letter from Management.
Written
Management chose the middle of the bench and put our shopping bag beside us.
A woman stopped in front of it.
“Is that taken?”
We lifted the bag onto our lap. She sat down.
A man came round the end of the bench and sat on our other side.
“Found it?” he asked her.
She unfolded a map. He leaned forward to see.
“Could you?” she said, looking at the bag.
We put it between our feet.
She opened another fold across our knees. He took the far edge.
“There’s the bridge,” he said.
She followed the road with her finger. We began to cross our legs. The road lifted.
“Just a moment,” she said.
We put both feet flat on the ground.
Her finger went past our left knee. His came to meet it.
