LETTER 13
The Founder
A fictional letter from Management.
Written
On her last day, Mrs Bell asked Management for the photograph in reception.
“We’ll need a property pass,” we said.
“Of course.”
We had been calling the man in the photograph our founder.
“That’s Arthur,” she said. “My husband.”
“What did he found?”
“He sells curtains.”
The form asked who the property belonged to. We put Mrs Bell.
For the description, we wrote PORTRAIT OF THE FOUNDER.
She looked at it.
“Photograph of Arthur,” we said.
She nodded.
We crossed out the description, wrote it again and signed.
We took down the frame and bent back the metal tabs. She lifted out the photograph.
“The frame can stay,” she said. “It was here already.”
Arthur was waiting by the car. He got out to open the boot.
We shook his hand and asked for his card.
He had one.
Upstairs, we put it in the frame.
