LETTER 28
The Fitting
A fictional letter from Management.
Written
Management took our new jacket to be taken in.
The woman put a small box in front of the mirror.
“Stand as you normally do.”
We stepped up, pulled our shoulders back and drew in our stomach.
She pinched the cloth at one side and put in a pin.
“Too tight?”
“No.”
She turned for the chalk. We let out a little air.
When she turned back, we drew in our stomach.
A week later, we tried the jacket again. The button pulled.
“How is it?”
We drew in our stomach.
“Perfect.”
On the bus, we sat down. The button pulled again. We stood up.
There were empty seats all the way home.
We held the rail.
