LETTER 53
The Draw
A fictional letter from Management.
Written
Management offered a draw while Nell was looking at the board.
“Shall we call it even?”
“One moment.”
She moved her chair to our side of the table. We stood to make room.
She studied the position from there, then went back to her own chair.
“It is getting late,” we said.
“Yes. A draw is fine.”
We held out our hand. She shook it without looking up.
We took our coat from the back of the chair.
“Good game,” we said.
“Can you leave the pieces?”
“Of course.”
We had one sleeve on when she reached across and moved our queen.
“That was not where we were going,” we said.
She moved it back and tried another square.
We left her at the table.
On the way home, we thought about the first square.
