LETTER 24

The Charge

A fictional letter from Management.

Written

Management returned the borrowed drill fully charged.

We had put up four coat hooks. At the tool cupboard, a woman had brought a new hinge and a little bag of screws.

“Is that ready?” she asked.

“Completely.”

We pressed the trigger so she could hear it.

She opened the bag.

“We’ll just top it up,” we said.

We took out the battery and put it on the charger. The light was red.

“It was green when we left.”

“I only need it for the gate.”

“It won’t take long.”

She put the hinge on the counter. We told her about the hooks. The first had been difficult because we had begun with the wrong bit. We showed her which one.

The light turned green.

We fitted the battery and pressed the trigger. It made a good, even sound.

“There.”

She held out her hand.

We put the battery back on the charger.

“Since we’ve used it.”

The red light came on. The woman put the screws back in their bag.
