LETTER 38
The Card
A fictional letter from Management.
Written
Management watched our neighbour’s daughter do a card trick at the kitchen table.
She held out the cards in a fan.
“Take one.”
We watched her face. We wanted her to know we were enjoying it.
We took one without looking down.
We put the card back.
She shuffled.
“Was it this?”
“We didn’t look.”
She laid the deck down.
“You have to look.”
“We were looking at you.”
“That’s later.”
She spread them again. We took the three of clubs.
“Three of clubs,” we said.
“Not to me. Just remember it.”
We put it back and kept the words in our mouth.
She shuffled. We whispered.
“I can hear you,” she said.
We shut our mouth.
She waited with the deck in her hands.
We held up three fingers.
She looked at them.
We put that hand behind our back.
