LETTER 39
The Beam
A fictional letter from Management.
Written
Before the meeting, Management crossed the room to reach our chair.
The projector stood beside the door. A photograph of a tree filled the screen.
We bent low.
Our back grew across the branches.
We bent lower.
A black hill covered half the tree.
“Sorry,” we said.
A bird landed on the hill.
We stopped.
It spread its wings.
We looked round. The woman beside the projector had her thumbs hooked together.
We took a step towards the chair.
The bird hopped along our shoulder.
“Just there,” she said.
We raised a finger.
She lowered her hands until the bird settled on it.
Our chair was a few steps away.
We moved our finger towards the next branch.
The bird came with us.
