LETTER 27
In Step
A fictional letter from Management.
Written
Management walked back from lunch beside a man from the next office.
His heels came down with ours. There was one click.
We shortened a step.
There were two clicks. Then one again.
He glanced at us. We looked at the pavement.
We let him get a little ahead. He slowed.
We drew level.
At the corner, he stopped.
Our foot was already on its way. We put it down beside his.
“This is me,” he said, pointing across the road.
“Of course.”
He crossed. We went straight on.
We could still hear his shoes.
For three steps, they came down with ours.
Then there were two clicks.
We took a longer step.
