LETTER 36

Following On

A fictional letter from Management.

Written

Management wrote a question in the margin of the programme.

We wanted to know whether the new garden would open on Sundays.

Before the microphone reached us, the man in front asked it.

We kept our hand up.

While the speaker answered, we crossed out the beginning and wrote FOLLOWING ON FROM THAT.

The microphone came along the row.

“Following on from that,” we said.

The speaker looked at us.

Our question was still underneath.

“About Sundays—”

“Yes,” said the man in front. “She said yes.”

“We were taking it a little further.”

“The small gate will be open,” said the speaker.

The woman with the microphone held out her hand.

We gave it back.

“Which gate?” we asked.

The speaker pointed to a gap in the wall on the plan.

We turned the programme over.

We put it against our knee and drew the wall, leaving a gap.
