WORK 33 / 1 OF 7

The Group Photograph

A company portrait, in four panels.

  1. A wide view of a photograph set. Management, wearing a bright tie, poses in front of a cloth backdrop. A curly-haired helper with round glasses holds the backdrop pole; a second helper with a dark bob and headband supports a softbox light. A camera stands on a tripod in front of them. Both helpers stand outside the area occupied by Management and the backdrop.

    Helper“All of us?”

    Management“Naturally.”

  2. A loose printed photograph is held at its edges by hands with the two helpers’ different cuffs. Inside the white photographic border, Management stands alone in the bright tie against the backdrop. Neither helper appears in the printed image.
  3. The same Management-only print hangs in a glazed frame. Pale grey reflections of both helpers lie over the print: one has curly hair and round glasses, the other a bob and headband. White diagonal glints cross the glass, and the darker printed Management figure remains visible beneath the reflections. The two actual helpers stand outside the frame; Management stands to the right with one hand raised toward it.

Management“Could you angle it a little?”

  4. The curly-haired helper grips the left side of the frame and turns it to a visible angle. The same printed Management portrait remains inside. The glass now has only a faint reflection of an empty wall corner and a white glint; the two reflected helpers are gone. Both actual helpers remain in the room, with the second helper watching beside Management.

    Management“Much better.”

The Tablecloth

Management straightens the tablecloth.

  1. Management stands behind the right side of a tea table, gripping the cloth and inspecting its off-centre company emblem. A curly-haired colleague with glasses stands at the left. Two upright cups, one with an acid-green stripe and one with a blue stripe, and an empty serving plate rest on the cloth.
  2. The cloth and emblem have moved left. Management still holds the cloth. The colleague supports the raised plate with one hand and holds the acid-striped cup by its handle as it is placed on the plate. The blue-striped cup remains on the cloth near the left edge.
  3. The company emblem is centred. The colleague holds the serving plate level in both hands, with both cups upright on it. Management smooths a small wrinkle in the now-empty cloth.

Thank You

Management leaves a message.

  1. Inside a corridor, a cleaner finishes wiping the left pane of a two-pane window. The cleaner wears an apron and holds a striped working cloth against the glass. A spare plain cloth hangs over the bucket. Management stands beside the adjoining pane in a dark suit and bright tie, holding a marker.
  2. Management has moved to the freshly cleaned left pane and written THANK YOU in large dark letters directly on the glass. The marker tip is still touching the upper end of the U. The cleaner stands by the right pane, still holding the striped working cloth. Both people remain on the corridor side of the glass.
  3. The large THANK YOU remains on the left pane. The cleaner keeps the striped working cloth in one hand and offers a second, plain cloth with the other. Management reaches for the offered cloth while holding the marker down at their side. The spare cloth is no longer on the bucket.
  4. Management is wiping the left pane with the second cloth. Some letters have gone, dark smears and much of THANK YOU remain, and ink has transferred onto the cloth. The marker is tucked into Management’s jacket. Beside them, the cleaner is already wiping the adjoining pane with the striped working cloth. Both people are still working.

Favourable Conditions

A little air in the office.

  1. Management stands at a desk with a mechanical fan fixed on the right, facing left. Its moving air lifts the loose sheets on Management’s own stack. Management catches the rising papers with the left hand and reaches toward the fan switch with the right. A nameplate reading MANAGEMENT rests at the front-left edge of the desk. A discarded packing-paper square lies beside its open parcel, with a pencil, a pin and scissors nearby.
  2. The same fan is switched off, its blades still, and the paper stack lies flat. Management holds the same packing-paper square in the left hand, folding a corner toward its centre while cutting one diagonal slit with scissors in the right. The pencil and pin remain on the desk, ready to become the stem and centre fastening. The nameplate is still at the desk edge.
  3. Management now holds the completed paper pinwheel on its pencil stem in the left hand. The right hand presses the fan switch on. The fan remains on the right and blows left, toward the pinwheel. The same loose paper stack begins to lift again. The scissors are back on the desk; the nameplate is still at the front edge.
  4. The fan is still running in the same direction. The paper pinwheel spins in Management’s left hand. With the right hand, Management has moved the same nameplate onto the same paper stack, holding the loose sheets down. Management watches the toy. There is no one else in the room.

Good Measure

Management checks the desk.

  1. Management stands behind a desk whose surface slopes down to the right. A familiar box spirit level rests directly on the desktop and follows that slope. Its bubble sits to the left of the two centre marks. A single pen lies across the slope at the high left side, beside one flat spare sheet of paper.
  2. Management has folded the same sheet and pushed it beneath the low right end of the spirit level, on top of the desk. The instrument is now horizontal and its bubble is between the centre marks. A clear gap opens beneath most of the instrument. The desktop remains at exactly the same rightward slope; nothing has been put under either desk leg. The pen is still at the left.
  3. The instrument remains horizontal on the folded paper and its bubble remains centred. Management looks satisfied and reaches back toward the pen. The single pen is rolling down the unchanged desktop toward its low right edge, with short motion strokes behind it.
  4. Management leans across the same sloping desk. The left hand carefully holds the horizontal spirit level in place; the folded paper still supports its right end. The right hand catches the single pen on the low right edge. Management’s legs spread to support the reach. The bubble is still centred, and the desk is still sloped.

Between Hands

A small handover.

  1. Management has lifted a closed loop of coral packing cord from a bundle of three folders on the office table. The folders are unbound. The top one has a bright green strip. Management holds the loop between both hands and looks at it. A colleague in a coral sweater stands nearby.
  2. The colleague has put one finger from each hand into the upper and lower stretches of the same closed loop. Management still holds it at two points. All four hands attend to the cord above the unchanged table and three unbound folders.
  3. The same uncut cord forms a simple crossed figure between the four hands. Management holds the two points on the left and the colleague holds the two on the right. One strand passes over the other at the middle. Both people watch the figure. The three folders remain unbound on the table.
  4. Management and the colleague continue holding the same crossed cord figure. A third colleague walks toward the door carrying the original bright-green-marked top folder. Only the two lower folders remain on the table. The pair keep playing; nobody blocks the departing colleague.

A Tidy Line

An orderly connection.

  1. Management stands beside a desk and adjusts a neat winding of coral cord around a telephone base with the left hand. The right hand steadies the handset at its cradle. The same continuous cord visibly joins the base to the handset. The base rests on the desk.
  2. Two small ringing arcs appear beside the telephone. Management raises the handset in the right hand. The taut coral cord lifts the same still-wound base completely clear of the desk; the base tilts below it. The left hand is open beneath the base but has not caught it.
  3. Management catches the lower edge of the same telephone base on the left hand while still holding the handset in the right. The base remains above the desk. The orderly coral winding stays around the base and its continuous lead still reaches the handset.
  4. Management leans toward the handset, with its left earpiece against an ear, and continues the call. The right hand holds the handset; the left hand supports the same neatly wound base close beneath the chin. One coral cord still joins them. The desk is clear.
