WE’VE COME BACK TO THIS.

A little circle rolls inside or outside a bigger one.
The pen goes along for the ride.

The circle rolls along the inside of the ring.

Inside a ring of 12. Different circles take different ways home.

0% puts the pen at the center. 100% puts it on the rim.

Move the turn yourself. Changing the circle or offset redraws this same fraction of its complete wheel return.

Ink

One complete wheel return: 5 laps around the ring, 7 turns in the opposite direction.

The wheel’s center and rim mark return together. The ink can meet itself sooner.

A circle goes around. A pen takes the longer way home.

The SVG keeps your current ink line and its settings. The circles, arm and pen stay on this page.

KEEP A FEW LINES TOGETHER

A sheet of your own.

0 / 4 lines

Add the current ink, then change the circle and try another. Or replace a retained line with the current drawing, keeping its place beneath later lines. Partial returns can stay too. The current drawing and its single-line SVG stay separate.

Retained ink only. The circle and pen stay in the current drawing above.

Each exact line can be kept once. Change the current settings or ink to add or replace a line.

A blank sheet, waiting for its first line.

The sheet keeps each line at its existing size: inside lines use 20 pixels per unit; outside lines use 8. Both fit this canvas, with different ring sizes.

Add a line when you want it to stay on this separate sheet.

Sheet Undo and Redo keep the most recent 20 changes. Changing or resetting the current drawing leaves this sheet and its prepared file alone. Reloading clears the sheet; keep its SVG for a copy.

What is making the line?

A pen attached to a circle rolling inside another circle traces a classical curve called a hypotrochoid. Here you can follow the circle as well as the line. About the mathematics — Wolfram MathWorld ↗
